Oakland Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon should be retiring any day now. Several NFL sources have stated that the announcement is a forgone conclusion.

Although the former NFL MVP could have succeeded in obtaining medical clearance for his injured neck, he has been informed by doctors that the potential for re-injury does exist. The Oakland Raiders are not expected to cut Gannon, but instead will allow him to announce his retirement when he is ready.

Rich Gannon has played 18 seasons in the NFL. He was a journeyman quarterback for most of his career, playing mainly as a backup, but rose to stardom when he joined the Raiders in 1999. He enjoyed his best season in 2002 throwing for 4689 yards, 26 touchdowns, and posting a 97.3 quarterback rating. In the process, he earned NFL MVP honors.
