The highly anticipated return of Jamal Lewis to the Baltimore Ravens has been delayed at least for the time being. Final details of his probation stemming from his conviction on a drug conspiracy charge have yet to be worked out, so it may be at least another week before Lewis is allowed to join his Ravens teammates at camp in Maryland.

Jamal Lewis pleaded guilty last October to using a cell phone to set up a drug deal in 2000, shortly after the Baltimore Ravens selected him with the 5th overall pick in that year's draft. He was sentenced in federal court to four months in federal prison, plus an additional two months in a halfway house in Atlanta. He was officially released from the halfway house on Tuesday, but must get clearance before he can leave the state of Georgia.

A team spokesman stated that he expected Lewis to arrive at camp early next week, but that is still not for certain. Once he does arrive, Lewis is expected to participate in three days of light workouts with head trainer Bill Tessendorf, before suiting up for his first practice in pads. The Baltimore Ravens first pre-season game is Aug 13th in Atlanta; its doubtful Lewis will be ready to play. The team would like to see him get in good football shape so he is ready for the season opener on September 11th versus the Indianapolis Colts.

Jamal Lewis nearly set a single season rushing record in 2003 when he ran for 2,066, falling just short of Eric Dickerson's record of 2,105 yards set in 1984. Lewis rushed for over 1,000 yards last season despite missing four games due to an ankle injury.
