Washington released veteran WR/KR Jerome Mathis Thursday. Mathis, a third-year player originally drafted by Houston, was expected to challenge incumbent Rock Cartwright for return duties.

The Redskins signed Mathis this offseason; he has six receptions on his career, but has returned three kicks for touchdowns, including one last season for the Texans.

Commentary: Mathis was an All-Pro return man his rookie season, when he averaged 28.6 yards per runback. The Redskins selected WR Devin Thomas and CB J.T. Tryon in April's draft, both of whom have strong return abilities. Injuries have mostly derailed Mathis' career, and two arrests in three years certainly haven't helped his image.

Fantasy Impact: Mathis made Houston's return game largely successful in 2005, and his career average of 28.5 yards per return is tops among active returners in the NFL.
