In order for the Washington Redskins to have a good season this year, the offense is going to have to pick it up from the last campaign. From the looks of things so far this preseason, the Redskins defense is destined to be the top in the league. The offense faltered in the Baltimore opener but showed some life against the Steelers in the second preseason game. The bottom line is that the offense must shine this year.

In the first 8 games of last season, there was no better team in moving and protecting the ball than the Skins. Then came the exact opposite in the second half when the team done opposite from the first half. 6-2 to 2-6. The reason this happened was the inconsistency in the offensive line. The line stayed hurt and it affected Campbell because he didn't throw any interceptions for a long time then all of a sudden he was tossing them 2 a game. Jason Campbell is a good QB and when he has decent protection it is nothing for him to throw for 300 yards and toss 2 or 3 scores. The Redskins sured up the line in the offseason through key free agent acquisitions and the draft.

Clinton Portis has to stay healthy for the team to excel. He should break the 10,000 yard mark early in the season and if he has a big one, he could become the leading rusher in the history of the Skins, surpassing Hall of Famer John Riggins. He looked good in the first half but when the spotty line was protecting he just plain looked bad. Moss, Randle El, and Cooley will also have better numbers if the line holds up.

As in the past couple seasons, the Skins defense is there. It is just that the offensive line has to step up in order for the Redskins to have a good season. If they can put together two big halves, mirror of the first half of last season, then the Skins should be a shoo in for the NFC East crown. If they can step up to the plate then don't be surprised of Lombardi trophy number 4.
