ASHBURN, Virginia - The Washington Redskins signed 2-time Pro Bowl LT Chris Samuels to a multi-year contract extension. Terms were not disclosed, but Samuels reportedly received a 7 year deal worth $47 million with a signing bonus of more than $15 million. The signing comes less than a month after the Seattle Seahawks signed perennial Pro Bowl LT Walter Jones to a 7 year contract worth more than $50 million. The Redskins also announced that they signed center Casey Rabach and re-signed defensive tackle Joe Salave'a, who started nine games last season.

Samuels, 27, was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2005 season. But Redskins coach Joe Gibbs identified the 6-5, 310-pound Samuels as one of the team's "core players" he plans to build around along with RT Jon Jansen, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. The third overall pick in the 1999 draft, Samuels has spent his entire five-year career with the Redskins and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2001 and 2002.

Rabach, 27, spent the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens and became a full-time starter last season, unseating Mike Flynn. The Redskins used Lennie Friedman and Cory Raymer at center last season.

Salave'a, 29, signed with the Redskins as a free agent last March and is a favorite of Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. He helped the team rank second in the NFL against the run, recording 30 tackles, including 22 solo, and two sacks this past season. Prior to joining the Redskins, Salave'a spent his previous five seasons with the Tennessee Titans (1998-2002) and the San Diego Chargers (2003). Williams was his defensive coordinator for the first three years in Tennessee. Salave'a enjoyed his best season in 2000, totaling 43 tackles and four sacks.
