Vinny Cerrato, the Washington Redskins' vice president of football operations, was kind enough to answer some of my questions on the team's roster and expectations for 2006.

Entering the season, the Redskins are believed to have enough talent to compete for a Super Bowl. That talent is thanks in large part to Cerrato, who works in earnest with Hall of Fame head coach Joe Gibbs and owner Dan Snyder to put the right players on the field.

Byrne: How much do you think the Redskins' numerous offseason acquisitions will help this year?

Cerrato: We think that we answered the questions in the offseason that we identified as areas that needed to improve.

Byrne: Do you anticipate your top pick, Rocky McIntosh, becoming a big-time linebacker -- good enough to make fans forget LaVar Arrington?

Cerrato: We just want Rocky to do what he does best; he doesn't have to replace LaVar.

Byrne: Were you surprised about the 10-6 finish last season? Not many picked the 'Skins to make the playoffs.

Cerrato: We are getting the players that fit the coach's system and we now have a good core of players, so it didn't surprise us as much as it surprised everyone else.

Byrne: Have there been any decisions you've made in the Redskins' front office that you wish never happened?

Cerrato: I believe we have learned from 2000 about signing older players to long contracts.

Byrne: How about the other way around. Are there any moves you didn't make that you are regretful about?

Cerrato: Nothing comes to my mind off the top of my head.

Byrne: How enjoyable and insightful is it to work with Dan Snyder and Joe Gibbs to make the right personnel decisions?

Cerrato: It is great. We have a plan on how we do business, and what type of players we want and stick to the plan.

Byrne: Finally, where do you see the Redskins ending up this season? Unlike last year, you guys won't be sneaking up on anyone.

Cerrato: We must stay healthy and take it one at a time. The only game that is important is the one we are getting ready to play.
