Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died Tuesday, one day after he was shot in Miami during a home invasion by an unknown assailant. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead around 5:30 a.m. at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery on Monday.

Taylor, whom the Redskins used the fifth overall pick on in the 2004 draft, was shot in the upper leg, which severed the key femoral artery and caused major blood loss. Police were sent to Taylor's home at approximately 1:45 a.m. Monday after Taylor's girlfriend called 911.

A former star at the University of Miami, Taylor was a one-time Pro Bowler in the NFL and among the league's best safeties. He leaves behind a 1-year-old daughter, Jackie.

The Redskins' game this weekend against Buffalo will go on as scheduled.
