This past Saturday, the Washington Redskins signed on free agent safety Tony Dixon. Dixon will bring with him experience to add to the secondary. Perhaps more importantly, signing on Dixon will give the Redskins some insurance in the event that Sean Taylor is unable to play some of the upcoming season. Taylor may be watching some of the season from the sidelines due to his legal problems.

The contract was drawn up by the Washington Redskins after he auditioned for the team on Saturday. The details of the contract are not yet known. It is likely that Dixon will receive a base salary of $540,000 for a one-year contract.

Before joining the Redskins, Tony Dixon played for the Dallas Cowboys. He has spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys after being drafted by them in 2001. Dixon drew the attention of several teams this spring because he can play both safety positions.

Thus far, Dixon has 96 tackles, six sacks and one interception in the 56 games he has played. Dixon has been a starter 15 times. Last year he started in seven games. Dixon is also known to be a standout special teams player, which will be another added benefit for the Washington Redskins.

Other potential safeties may have been considered before the Redskins signed on Dixon. The Redskins started considering the addition of a safety due to Sean Taylor's legal difficulties. Tony Dixon will serve as a great addition for the Redskins and will also be of great help if Taylor is in fact out for part of the 2005 NFL season.
