Carlos Rogers, the Washington Redskins' top pick in this year's draft and the ninth overall selection, has a stress fracture in his foot and may not be ready when camp opens August 1st. The injury was originally diagnosed as an ankle sprain, which Rogers suffered while working out on his own at his alma mater. Rogers was quoted telling reporters he stepped in a hole. After further tests, doctors also discovered the stress fracture in his foot, which may have been a pre-existing injury. He has been in a walking boot and on crutches the past two weeks, and is scheduled to be reexamined again this week. He is doubtful for the Redskins first scrimmage on August 6th vs. Carolina.

Playing for the Auburn Tigers, Carlos Rogers was the winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the top cornerback in the NCAA. He has been battling Walt Harris for one of the starting Cornerback spots opposite Shawn Springs after Fred Smoot left via free agency to the Minnesota Vikings. Redskin coaches were very impressed with Rogers play early in camp before the injury, and envisioned him as eventually taking over the starting spot.

On Thursday the Redskins signed Cornerback Artell Hawkins, a reserve with the Panthers last season. He was brought in to help provide depth to the secondary now that Rogers is sidelined and due to the uncertainty about the future of starting safety Sean Taylor, who is scheduled to go on trial in September after being charged with aggravated assault with a firearm. He is facing a minimum sentence of 3 years in prison if convicted.
