Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor turned down a plea deal on Tuesday. Taylor and his father, who is a local police chief, appeared in court yesterday. At the court hearing, prosecutors once again offered the second year player a guilty plea for his felony charge of aggravated assault in exchange for the minimum sentence of three years, but Taylor declined the offer. This is the same deal that was offered previously.

The Miami-Dade County Judge who is handling the case has allowed Sean Taylor to travel to training camp later this month. Circuit Judge Mary Barzee allowed Taylor to travel outside of Florida and there was no objection from the prosecutors.

A tentative trial date is set for Sept. 12, which is the day after the Washington Redskins open their regular season. There remains a possibility that the trial could be rescheduled beyond that date. Florida is known for having extremely strict sentencing laws for felons who commit a crime with a firearm. If convicted, Taylor could face more than 10 years in prison.

Sean Taylor was coming off a fairly productive rookie season. He recorded four interceptions and nearly 100 tackles in his rookie campaign. Now he will be forced to somehow get refocused on football while dealing with a trial that will determine whether or not he will have an NFL career.
