The Washington Redskins announced on Saturday that they've released linebacker Michael Barrow and safety Andre Lott. The veteran Barrow never played a down for the team after signing a 6-year deal before the 2004 season. Washington had high hopes for Barrow when he signed with them in 2003; he was the NY Giants leading tackler with a career high 148 in his final season with the Skins' division rival.

He sat out all of last season with tendonitis problems in his left knee. Michael Barrow's slow recovery leading up to this season left the Washington Redskins with little choice but to cut ties with him. A last resort would have been to rework Barrow's deal in which he would be paid a the league minimum and could earn the rest of the money as a bonus if he returned healthy, but his representatives rejected those terms.

Washington will save about $1.7 million on this years salary cap, but will absorb about the same amount of a cap hit in 2006 by making this move. The extra funds this season will go to help the team sign draft choices Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell.

Andre Lott, a fifth round draft choice in 2002, was also injured for most of the 2004 season with a torn pectoral muscle, appearing in only four games. He was granted an injury settlement after fracturing a tibia in the final day of June's mini-camp. He would have had to battle for a spot on the roster if he were healthy after the team signed veteran Omar Stoutmire. Lott appeared in 31 games during his first three seasons with the Redskins, earning a handful of starts.
