WASHINGTON (Ticker) - After setting a career high with 90 catches, Laveranues Coles appears to be headed out of the nation's capital. The Washington Post is reporting Monday that the Washington Redskins will release their leading receiver.

Coles signed a seven-year, $35 million contract, including a $13 million signing bonus, with the Redskins in 2003. He caught 82 passes for 1,204 yards and six touchdowns in his first year with the team and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl. This past season, Coles again led the team in catches, but failed to reach 1,000 yards in receiving (950) and averaged just 10.6 yards per catch.

According to the newspaper, Coles and his agent Roosevelt Barnes met with owner Daniel Snyder and coach Joe Gibbs on Sunday. "We had a couple of good talks. That's the only statement I want to make," Gibbs told the newspaper.

The huge signing bonus tendered to Coles would force the Redskins to take a salary cap hit of about $9 million in 2005. If they wait until after June to release him, the cap hit would split to $4.5 million in 2005 and 2006.

Coles, 27, spent his first three years with the New York Jets before signing as a restricted free agent with the Redskins. In his final year with the Jets, Coles caught 89 passes for 1,264 yards and five touchdowns.
