Not so long ago, most of Rutgers' recruiting victories were scored over Temple, Delaware and Hofstra. That has obviously changed.

On April 18, the Scarlet Knights announced a verbal commitment from Tom Savage of Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pa., the first five-star quarterback ever to cast his lot with the school.

No doubt Temple, Delaware and Hofstra still wanted Savage. But so did Miami, Georgia, Penn State and Tennessee.

"When I looked at Rutgers," Savage told the Newark Star-Ledger, "I realized they were building something special, and I want to be part of it."

A 6-foot-4, 230-pounder, Savage has one of the strongest arms in the current crop of rising seniors and runs a 4.7 40, quite impressive for his size. A broken foot limited him to less than half a season in 2007, but he still threw for over 800 yards and eight touchdowns. Rivals.com has listed him as the No. 24 prospect among all players nationwide.

Savage was also the first nominee for the 2009 All-America Bowl featuring the country's top high school stars.

Mike Teel will quarterback the Scarlet Knights this season as a senior. In 2009, when Savage arrives (assuming he honors his verbal commitment), his competition as Teel's heir will include Jabu Lovelace, Dom Natale, Chris Paul-Etienne and incoming 2008 freshman D.C. Jefferson.
