Mike Larrow's recent verbal commitment to the Rutgers University football program may have been a belated Mother's Day present.

'I just wanted to end it (the recruiting process), my Mom wanted to end it, and I thought Rutgers was the best fit for me," Larrow, a 6-foot-4, 258-pound defensive lineman out of Union (New Jersey) High School, told the Newark Star-Ledger.

It didn't hurt the Scarlet Knights chances with Larrow that his high school coach is Brian Sheridan, a former Rutgers linebacker.

While the Scarlet Knights would like to see their latest recruit put on another 20 pounds and play defensive tackle, he was primarily an edge rusher as a sophomore and junior in high school. He had narrowed his final choices down to Rutgers, South Florida, Syracuse, Illinois and Oregon.

ESPN's 'Inside Recruiting' site said of him: ''Larrow will flash some tools to catch your attention. He is a thickly built defensive end prospect and you could see him developing into a lighter defensive tackle. The thing that really grabs your eye with this kid is his ability to get off the ball. He is explosive out of his stance and displays the ability to consistently be the first one moving on the snap of the ball. You see his get-off and envision his ability to develop into a good and disruptive player.''

Plus, he obeys his mother.
