When recruiting is going well, as it is for Rutgers in assembling its freshman class of 2009, it becomes almost like grocery shopping.

A quarterback to ultimately replace Mike Teel? Check. A running back who could possibly make RU fans forget about Ray Rice? Check and check. Offensive linemen? Check, check and check.

Last week, Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano was able to put a check mark in the "Big, physical, wide receiver" column when 6-foot-2, 190-pound Shawney Kersey of Woodbury (New Jersey) High School gave his in-state school a verbal commitment.

"He's big, he's somewhat physical, and he can run," said ESPN's recruiting Web site of Kersey, adding, "He has shown the courage to go over the middle and make tough catches in a crowd."

Kersey also selected his future school in a crowd, as scholarship offers were beginning to pile up. In the end, he said, it came down to Rutgers and Big East rival West Virginia.

As a junior in a run-oriented offense, Kersey (clocked at 4.5 in the 40) caught 28 passes for 524 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored four times on returns and had 55 tackles and three interceptions as a safety on defense.
