METAIRIE, LOUISIANA - The New Orleans Saints took a big step in shoring up their defense Tuesday by re-signing safety Jay Bellamy to a three-year contract. Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 2, Bellamy has led the Saints in tackles in each of the past two seasons and has started every game since joining the club in 2001.

After seven years in Seattle, Bellamy signed with the Saints as a free agent in 2001 and has made 440 tackles with 4 1/2 sacks and nine interceptions in 64 games as the anchor of New Orleans' secondary. "We have a good mix of youth and experience on defense, and Jay brings a veteran presence to the secondary, not to mention his productivity and consistency," Saints coach Jim Haslett said. "He has been one of our best defenders since we signed him as a free agent on 2001 and we considered re-signing him a priority entering the offseason."
