New Orleans running back Deuce McAllister ran for 73 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' 31-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. McAllister's effort was his best since coming back from a knee injury that knocked him out of the 2007 season.

Commentary: Saints head coach Sean Payton had been waiting for a sign that McAllister was ready to become the bruising back he once was. While Sunday's effort won't make many highlight reels, it will provide Payton confidence in the recovering running back, as well as a much-needed breather for RB Reggie Bush.

McAllister looked decisive in his cuts, a difficult thing to accomplish for runners who come off knee surgery, and made a lot of people look stupid, both on and off the field.

"He proved a lot of people wrong," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said.

If McAllister continues to run over defenders like he did Sunday, there's a good chance that the Saints will be in contention for the NFC South crown.

Fan Pulse: Saints fans who were worried about the need for a short-yardage back are rejoicing: http://blackandgold.com/forums/saints/23125-duece-loose.html.

Fantasy Football Commentary: Bush owners, tread lightly. There are only so many carries to go around and if McAllister is healthy, he will get the goal-line touches.

Injury Watch: Cornerback Randall Gay was inactive for Sunday's game versus the 49ers with a hamstring injury. We will keep you posted on his status for Week 5 against the Vikings.
