The State of Louisiana has made their annual $12 million+ payment to the New Orleans Saints. They actually cut a check for $12,415,267.53 on Tuesday. This is an annual payment that is made to keep the team in Louisiana, according to Louisiana Superdome official Bill Curl. It's part of a 10 year contract that was negotiated in 2001 by former Louisiana governor Mike Foster.

The New Orleans Saints are happy to collect their due from the state, but current Louisiana governor Kathleen Blanco is trying to renegotiate this deal. The reason for the renegotiation is simple; the state is struggling to make the yearly payments. Over the past two years, Louisiana has had to borrow money from other state fiscal resources in order to make the payment to Saints.

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has cut off re-negotiation talks until after the upcoming season. Louisiana can opt out of the current deal in 2007.
