Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes was hospitalized on Monday, though team officials were not specific on the details of his ailment. When asked by reporters, head coach Mike Holmgren stated that Rhodes had complained of sickness and was held overnight for observation. It is unclear if he'll be on the sidelines when the team opens its regular season on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Rhodes is entering his 25th season as an NFL coach, and his 3rd with Seattle. He served as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles for three years and also spent one season at the helm of the Green Bay Packers.

In his absence, linebackers coach John Marshall has been tapped to fill-in for Rhodes and lead the Seattle Seahawks defense. Marshall also joined Holmgren's coach staff three years ago with Rhodes, having previously been defensive coordinator/assistant head coach for the Carolina Panthers from 1999-2001. The Seattle Seahawks are defending NFC West champions, but were defeated by division rival St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Holmgren said that when Rhodes returns he will coach in the team's coaching booth, where many coordinators call the plays from up above the action.
