Now that the Seattle Seahawks are allowed to talk to their franchise player Shaun Alexander, it looks like negotiations for a long term deal with the superstar running back are now back on track. Seahawks Vice President Mike Reinfeldt spoke with Alexander's agent Jim Steiner over the phone on Sunday in hopes of getting talks back to the bargaining table, and more importantly, getting Alexander to training camp. Seattle veterans report to camp on July 28.

Reinfeldt didn't get into details about his discussion with Steiner, but he made it clear that the team is willing to discuss a long term deal with Alexander. Under NFL rules, teams weren't allowed to talk to their franchise player until July 15, unless that player agreed to sign a tender, which Alexander refused earlier this month. He has insisted he wants a long term contract and is willing to miss regular season games if necessary. He has been upset with the organization since falling two yards short of the NFL Rushing title in the final game of the season last year, saying that he felt betrayed. He would have been due a bonus if he had won the crown.

The rift between the two sides may have also grown larger with word that Seattle was interested in former Buffalo running back Travis Henry, whom it was announced over the weekend, was headed to the Tennessee Titans for a third round draft pick. The team also tried to shop Alexander to other clubs prior to the 2005 draft, but didn't find an offer they deemed good enough to part with the unhappy All-Pro.
