Steve Spurrier is back! The coach everyone loves to hate finally returned to SEC play last Saturday after a narrow win against Conference USA cellar dweller UCF.

Standing on the sideline in week one he must have had a ton of frustration. Miscues and just bad decisions kept Central Florida in the ball game the whole night and it was not the way Spurrier wanted to start off his new coaching campaign. A 24-15 final in South Carolina's favor at least gave Spurrier his first win at the school. After giving up 341 yards of total offense to the Golden Knights there were many question marks heading into his first SEC game since leaving the University of Florida. Spurrier's lone consolation was that his offense was able to make some big plays downfield and put points on the board.

Week 2 brought the coach back to the SEC and 'between the hedges' at Georgia. QB Blake Mitchell played admirably, completing 22-34 passes for 236 yards and 1 TD, but 2 INTs. Some long Spurrier-esque plays allowed 5 different Gamecocks receivers to average in double digit yards per catch. The rush defense proved to be the killer though, as USC gave up 238 yards on the ground and ended up with a 17-15 loss.

Steve Spurrier has some work to do in Columbia, but this season isn't a wash by any means. There is some decent talent on the team and the depth will only grow as the season moves on. It has only taken Spurrier a few years to get his teams to the conference championship games, so don't be surprised to see the South Carolina Gamecocks in Atlanta by 2007!
