What some might see as a competition for starting running back duties is really more of a cooperative effort. In 2005, Southern Mississippi Eagles' running backs Larry Thomas and Cody Hull shared the bulk of the team's carries and combined for nearly 1,300 yards and 7 touchdowns. Can they continue to succeed in a duel running back attack? I think so.

Now let me not get ahead of myself. "Success" might be a bit too strong of a word for a rushing attack that finished 95th in division one football in terms of running the football. Then again, Southern Miss was a predominantly pass oriented attack thanks to the arm of Dustin Almond so Thomas and Hull didn't necessarily get enough touches to put up huge numbers.

In any case, those days are over now because Almond has graduated. Larry Thomas and Cody Hull will now be expected to carry the Southern Miss offense and that should translate into some impressive numbers for both backs. Heading into their junior seasons both backs will need to step up due to the absence of an experienced signal caller. If they don't, it will be a long season for the Eagles' offense. If they do, Southern Miss should once again find themselves in a postseason bowl appearance in '06.
