For Trae Williams, 2007 was the year of the trey.

Three times during South Florida's breakout season, Williams picked off a pass and took it to the end zone. He scored on a 73-yard return against Cincinnati, went 64 yards against Syracuse and 21 yards in a victory over Pitt, making him one of just two DBs in the nation to accomplish that trifecta.

He also had three other other interceptions and 55 tackles (47 solo).

Williams was more productive than fellow cornerback Mike Jenkins, and is a shade faster. Moreover, he played well in the East-West Shrine Bowl while Jenkins pulled out of the Senior Bowl at the last minute. Nevertheless, it's Jenkins who is projected to go in the first round of the NFL draft, with Williams generally regarded as a second-rounder.

Not that Williams is jealous. He came to his position a little late, arriving at USF from Plant City as an all-state running back, and Jenkins was already beginning to establish himself.

Two things now set Williams apart from most cornerbacks -- his soft hands. He goes after passes like a wide receiver, and led the nation in interceptions with 13 over the past two years.

The only possible knock on the Bull senior is his height (5-foot-10), but he carries a solid 190 pounds and runs a consistent 4.45.

"I'd like to do a 4.3 at the Combine," Williams said. "And I need to work on my backpedaling a little bit. I'm ready."
