Ben Moffitt had to spend a lot of his time at the NFL Scouting Combine responding to allegations by his soon-to-be ex-wife, Shauna, that she wrote all of Ben's term papers while he was a student at South Florida.

"It's just an unfortunate thing between me and her," Moffitt kept saying -- although he didn't duck the questions.

Of course, compared to some "character issues" facing other prospective NFL rookies, accusations of wifely ghost writing seem rather mild. Nor did Shauna have anything to do with the 104 tackles Moffitt made from his middle linebacker position in 2007, or his strong performance in the combine itself.

Although he didn't run a 40 in Indianapolis (he's been clocked at 4.7), Moffitt finished second in the 3-cone drill, third in the broad jump and sixth in the vertical leap, demonstrating impressive flexibility and athleticism for a player 6-foot-2, 240. He also did 23 lifts in the bench press.

He's also been praised for instincts that enable him to relentlessly follow the football wherever it goes -- instincts that probably make up for the step some scouts say he lacks in quickness.

The online pundits are generally not in Moffitt's corner, however.

"He probably profiles as just a backup[ and special teamer at the next leve,, at best," says one, "but he's the kind of guy you hate to doubt."

"Ben Moffitt is going to struggle to hear his name called on draft day," said another.

Nevertheless, the 2007 South Florida defensive captain is ranked 13 out of 114 inside linebackers by NFL Draft Scout Profile. As a Bull senior, he had 12 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and four interceptions, one returned for a touchdown.

"I've been honest with everybody," Moffitt said about the Shauna issue. "I've told the truth."

And there are no rumors that she took his Wonderlic test for him.
