Now, South Florida can say it has two Big East Defensive Players of the Year in its program.

Unfortunately, only one of them can still play. Kevin Patrick, newly hired as the Bulls' defensive ends coach, earned his honor in 1993, when he registered 10 sacks for the University of Miami. The year before, he anchored the D-line on a Hurricane team that won the national championship with a victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl. For his career, he had 174 tackles and 23 sacks.

Patrick coached defensive ends at USF from 1996-98 before leaving to enter private business. Now, he has the chance to tutor the conference's top defensive player for 2007, George Selvie (31.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks).

"George's accolades speak for themselves," Patrick said, "but we need to build on that success."

Even beyond Selvie, South Florida is loaded at the defensive end position. Rising senior Jarriett Buie started opposite Selvie last season and posted 26 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack. Rising junior Matt Aycox saw some reserve duty last season, and redshirt freshmen David Fonua, Patrick Hampton, Kenneth Luberice and Darren Powe now take the field. In addition, the Bulls signed four-star junior college transfer David Bedford from Independence (Kansas) Community College.

Patrick will replace former Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney, who spent a year on Jim Leavitt's staff before taking a job with the University of Florida.

Point of trivia: Patrick, then an assistant coach, was the first Bull to run out on the field to start the school's inaugural football in 1996 game versus Kentucky Wesleyan. (Courtesy of the Tampa Tribune.)
