Steelers Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw admitted on the Dan Patrick Show on June 19 (Hour 2, Tuesday) that he used steroids prescribed to him to help in recovering from injuries during his football career.

The question in Steel City is whether fans are buying what Bradshaw's selling. The fans on the Steelers Fever forum are quick to defend and implicate Bradshaw. On one side of the coin, the use of anabolic steroids while in competition is not acceptable in any sport. But as one poster points out, this is now, and that was then.

"I would like to point out before anyone tries to discredit the Steelers success of the 1970's that back then steroids were not a banned substance by the NFL nor were they deemed illegal drugs by the United States government. They were readily available to most pro athletes, so it wasn't like the Steelers could get them and another team could not."

While that is a logical point, there are obvious benefits to steroid use, and it's not just about their ability to build muscle mass. The fact steroids gives athletes an unnatural advantage in recovery time is deemed as an unfair advantage. A poster points that out.

"I despise Terry Bradshaw and this just makes it even more justified..... this stupid moron seems to think athletes take steroids to get bigger.... sigh...I'd say the majority of athletes take it for the sole reason of healing faster."

Bradshaw clarified his comments, saying he's not a bodybuilder, and his steroid use while playing was not done in an effort to increase size or strength.

One poster sees the oft-debated issue of steroid use in the NFL back in the 1970s as black and white.

"Steriods weren't banned then. They are banned now in professional sports. Nothing to argue."
