Syracuse University's football team, which surrendered 54 sacks in 2007 season, has already suffered two in 2008.

Of course, Mike Williams and Brandon Gilbeaux weren't sacked by the opposition, but by the university itself. A few weeks after star wide receiver Williams became an academic casualty for the 2008 season, the 6-foot-3, 271-pound Gilbeaux -- a projected starter on the defensive line -- was also cut down by grades.

A rising (or, now, falling) junior from Washington, D.C., Gilbeaux started every game last season at defensive end, notching 49 tackles, six tackles for loss and a sack. He had eight tackles and a sack at Pitt and blocked a PAT attempt to go along with six tackles in the Connecticut game.

Gilbeaux definitely seems out for this season, according to the Syracuse Post-Standard, but Williams is reportedly trying to enroll at Onondaga Community College for a summer session in hopes of regaining his eligibility. This would be huge for the beleaguered Orange offense, considering Williams scored 10 of the team's 24 touchdowns last fall.
