Leavander Jones' recent verbal commitment to the Syracuse University football team was a gamble, both for the Orange and Jones. But that only makes sense, considering Jones plays his high school ball in Atlantic City.

The best thing about the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Jones, from the Syracuse point of view, is his 4.4 time in the 40. In fact, given the team's depleted receiving corps, head coach Greg Robinson probably wishes he could have him right now.

As a junior wide receiver, Jones caught 29 passes for 404 yards. As a seldom-used running back, he averaged 7.4 yards per carry.

"When I went up there (to Syracuse)," Jones said, "I saw that they run a spread offense, and that's just like what we run at Atlantic City."

Jones is only Syracuse's second commitment for the 2009 season. It could well be that prospects still on the fence are waiting to see if Robinson is fired after this year.
