Tennessee Volunteers head coach Phil Fulmer was on the proverbial hot seat for most of the 2007-08 college football season. But a trip to the SEC championship game garnered their longtime head coach enough support to stay on with the club.

Still, the college football world is a ‘what have you don for me lately’ kind of place, so if the Volunteers don’t continue to play at a championship level, Fulmer won’t be long for their world.

And of course, recruiting is probably as important to his success as anything else. Thus, let’s take a look at the three players Fulmer and the Volunteers have picked up verbal commitments from thus far in 2009.

Dominique Allen: The 5-foot-11, 235-pound running back from Henry County High School in Paris, Tenn., demonstrates great feet and balance. His shiftiness should do the club well in the coming years.

Je’Ron Stokes: A 6-1, 178-pound wide receiver from Philadelphia, Stokes runs the 40-yard dash in 4.44 seconds. As a junior in high school, this four-star prospect managed 28 catches for 617 yards and six touchdowns. Thus, he’s been reasonably productive.

And we haven’t even seen what he can do as a senior yet.

Damien Thigpen: Thigpen, a 5-8, 170-pound athlete from Manassas, Va., runs the 40 in a ridiculous 4.34. Usually guys of his stature and speed aren’t that strong, but such isn’t the case with Thigpen.

He benches 295 pounds. On top of that, he possesses a solid 34-inch vertical leap.

Over the past two seasons in high school, Thigpen has accumulated 1,232 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns to go along with 72 tackles. It’s hard to know what position he’s going to play in college, but it’s not hard to figure out that this four-star prospect is certainly going to play.
