After an arm fracture suffered in last week’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and subsequent surgery, the Houston Texans placed safety C.C. Brown on injured reserve.

Commentary: Up against a whole lot of history going into the franchise’s 100th game against the weakened, still-dangerous Indianapolis Colts, whom they’re 1-11 against lifetime, the Texans did not need to take this hit. The starting strong safety – and the only true SS on the Houston roster – will presumably be replaced by Dominique Barber, a green rookie. Considering Peyton Manning torched the Texans for 270 and 338 yards in two 2007 meetings despite Gary Kubiak’s strategy of dropping the safeties back a good 5 to 10 yards deeper than customary, this one could be ugly.

Welcomed to the Houston roster Mondy was fullback Cecil Sapp, who was mostly a special-teams player in his five years with the Denver Broncos, earning a reputation for both blocking and tackling which culminated in six stops on the third unit in just 11 games in 2006. Despite playing from the Broncs in all 16 games in 2007, Denver cut him this year presumably to make way for Michael Pittman.

Fan Pulse: Folks have been downbeat in Houston about their Texans lately (and “lately” here means “for more or less throughout the team’s history”). For a representative pessimistic sample on Sapp, you can check out the Texans Talk forum. Best biting comment, from The Iron Duke: “You know, just last week I was telling a friend that this team was a Cecil Sapp away from being competitive.”

Fantasy Football Impact: Manning is throwing, Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison are receiving, the Colts need a win ... the advice is pretty clear here. (Though if the still-wounded Indy offensive line folds repeatedly, that 2 percent starting the Texan 'DST' is going to look pretty clever on Monday.) As for Steve Slaton and his fantasy difference-making touchdown, thanks a lot from last week's losers. Also start him again this week; what the heck? Somebody’s (probably) gotta score for Houston.
