Losing the last game of the regular season to the San Francisco 49ers may be the best thing to ever happen to the Houston Texans. The loss in the 'Bush Bowl' saw Houston condemned as the lowest ranked team in the NFL, yet rewarded with the number one pick in the first round of the 2006 draft.

The Texans are expected to use this pick to draft Reggie Bush, the talented tailback from the University of Southern California.

Bush, with 1,740 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in 2005, led USC to the Rose Bowl and became the hottest property in college football. In December, Bush's achievements were recognized when he was named the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner, beating both 2004 winner and Trojan teammate Matt Leinart and Vince Young from the University of Texas.

An alternative draft option for the Texans is to pick Houston native Vince Young. The promising quarterback had a remarkable 2005 season and led the Longhorns to Rose Bowl victory over USC. Houston is unlikely to go for Young however, as current quarterback David Carr appears to have cemented his place as the Texans' signalcaller after signing a 3-year contract extension. Carr's presence at Houston also effectively rules USC Quarterback Matt Leinart out of a move south.

Since entering the league in 2002, the Houston Texans have struggled to progress on the football field as a franchise. Progression however, can only come with success and success comes from winning games. Bush's ability and potential to be an NFL great is unquestionable. Alongside Carr and wide receiver Andre Johnson, Houston can finally field an offense that is capable of winning games.

This year's draft should produce some of the most exciting football talent in years. It will be fascinating to see how the likes of Bush, Leinart and Young adapt to life in the NFL. For Houston, making the right pick in this draft could change the fortunes of the franchise. Reggie Bush is the right choice for the Texans and for them to make any other pick would be a mistake.
