Texas received a solid oral commitment from Rivals' No. 4 defensive tackle in the nation, Calvin Howell of San Antonio, Texas. The Warren High School prospect became the Longhorns' 18th commitment for the 2009 recruiting season.

"I think Calvin always figured he'd end up at Texas," Warren High coach Bryan Dausin said. "He tried to be open-minded about it all, but they really opened up the hospitality with him."

The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder logged in 61 tackles, 18 of them tackles for loss, four sacks and four fumble recoveries as a junior last season. Howell is the first defensive tackle of the class,

Mack Brown and company beat out Texas A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tennessee.

COMMENTARY: Texas' 18-player class includes 10 four-star players and one five-star quarterback. Now comes the hard part: Hoping none of them waffle and opt for other schools come National Signing Day.
