Hoxie High School (Hoxie, Ark.) defensive tackle Derek Johnson gave Texas his verbal commitment Wednesday for the 2009 recruiting class. The 6-foot-3, 290-pounder logged in 81 tackles and four sacks last season as a junior. As a high school sophomore, he had almost 100 tackles and six sacks.

The Longhorns beat out Arkansas State, Arkansas, Alabama, Baylor, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Oklahoma for Johnson.

COMMENTARY: Pretty good pickup for the DT-needy Longhorns. Although unrated by Rivals, Johnson’s stats are quite impressive.
