Austin, Texas, missed the devastation from Hurricane Ike. But the storm’s effects may still impact the Longhorns’ season.

Commentary: Because of potential high winds and heavy rains, University of Texas officials postponed last weekend’s scheduled contest between the Horns and Arkansas. Thanks to both teams having an open date Sept. 27, delaying the game two weeks made the decision an easy and correct call.

However, No. 7 Texas loses its week of rest between the nonconference and Big XII portions of its schedule. With the first weather postponement in school history, the Horns host Rice and Arkansas consecutively and get no break before traveling to Boulder for their conference opener with Colorado.

The schedule gets much tougher the next week, when Texas meets No. 2 Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout at the Cotton Bowl. Fifth-ranked Missouri then visits Austin for what shapes up to be an exciting and hard-fought encounter. The Longhorns barely see a letup in their next two games against Oklahoma State and No. 11 Texas Tech.

The Texas Capitol’s eclectic music scene also plays havoc with the rescheduled meeting of the Horns and Hogs. The Austin City Limits Festival takes the stage from Sept. 26-28, and obtaining hotel reservations closer than San Antonio or Waco remains out of the question.

If the Horns run the table with their murderous schedule, their national ranking will climb each week. With an 8-0 start, another national championship for Mack Brown and company would be well within the realm of possibility.

Fan pulse: Since Ike left Austin untouched, fans aren’t happy with the schedule change. ABC has plugged the game into the 2:30 p.m. slot. Injuries: Left guard Charlie Tanner is questionable for the Rice game with a sprained left ankle.
