Non-conference games rarely hold much significance in college football. However, Texas A&M’s season hinges mightily on the outcome of Saturday’s game with Miami.

Commentary: Although few expected the Aggies to challenge for the Big XII title in head coach Mike Sherman’s first year, virtually no one anticipated a debut loss to Arkansas State. The next week, the Aggies compounded the doubts as they struggled to defeat New Mexico, 28-22.

Quarterback Stephen McGee’s sprained shoulder suffered against the Lobos adds another question to the mix. After McGee left early in the first quarter, backup Jerrod Johnson, who lost the starting job in a heated battle during August drills, threw three touchdown passes to even the Aggies’ record at 1-1.

McGee, the team's starter for the past 29 games, claims his shoulder has healed. But the senior signal-caller is prepared for whatever role Sherman assigns him.

“If I can’t go, I’ll be preparing on the sidelines, helping my teammates and being a leader,” he said.

A&M’s open date last weekend gave Sherman plenty of time to evaluation his options. But the Aggies’ head coach won’t reveal his quarterbacking plans until just before the 2:30 CDT kickoff on ABC television.

“It was somewhat fortuitous on our part to have the week off when we did,” Sherman said. “It gives us a chance to really isolate in practice on some things that we need to work on.”

Last season’s 34-17 loss to the Hurricanes fueled the fan fire that led to Dennis Franchione’s dismissal as A&M's head coach at year's end. Back-to-back losses to Miami could ignite another bonfire (this time against Sherman).

Fan Pulse: The Aggies remain mixed about who should quarterback – McGee or Johnson. Check out this link for some reactions and opinions:

Injury Report: In addition to McGee, A&M running back Mike Goodson remains questionable against Miami with a sprained knee.
