The Texas A&M Aggies are faced with the daunting task of replacing both of their starting cornerbacks. They lost cornerback Byron Jones and Jante Buhl to graduation (both signed on as free agents with the Atlanta Falcons), so they are now relying on underclassmen to help fill that void.

Redshirt Sophmore Brock Newton, who did get some playing time last year, and freshman Danny Gorrer, who excelled during spring drills, are penciled in as the new starters thus far. However, coach Dennis Franchione has been raving about junior college transfer Marquis Carpenter. Since training camp opened late last week, Carpenter has impressed the coaching staff with his athleticism and knack for making plays. Carpenter came over from Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas.

With the emergence of Marquis Carpenter, the cornerback position could go from an area of uncertainty to one the strong suits of the Texas A&M Aggies' defense. The coaching staff will take another good look at Carpenter, Gorrer, and Newton when they suit up for a full pads workout on Wednesday.
