While all the hype for the Texas A&M surrounds Reggie McNeal and the potent Aggies offense, it will be the Aggies defense that will foil any hopes of a BCS bowl bid.

Clemson racked up nearly 400 yards of total offense in week one. SMU racked up nearly 350 yards of total offense (despite losing 66-7) in week two. The latest assault on the Texas A&M defense came from a puny Texas State squad that managed to rack up nearly 500 yards of offense and 31 points this past Thursday.

These numbers will begin to catch up with the Texas A&M Aggies when their schedule toughens up later this season. Teams like Iowa State, Texas Tech and Texas will run up the score against this unit if things don't begin to tighten up by late October. Even a down Oklahoma squad could prove to be a pitfall.

Free Safety Jaxson Appel and linebacker Justin Warren seem to be the only starters that are making any sort of real impact on the defensive side of the ball. The problem is that their play is not elevating the play of those around them. You can chalk up a lot of the issues to inexperience, like the fact that both starting quarterbacks are new, but that is no excuse for the butter defense that this team has been playing thus far.

The Texas A&M defensive unit has essentially four weeks to get their act together before going on a four game gauntlet starting October 29th at home against the Iowa State Cyclones.

They had better get up to speed by that point because Reggie McNeal, Courtney Lewis, and Jason Carter can't do it all on their own.
