A Lubbock County grand jury has indicted Texas Tech starting center Stephen Hamby for aggravated assault. The charges stem from a March 29 incident in which Hamby supposedly punched a man in the face, causing a fractured jaw, then fled the scene.

"His status is we'll see what the facts are and then address it based on the facts," head coach Mike Leach said regarding Hamby's status with the team. "We're not going to jump to any conclusions."

The 6-foot-3, 287-pounder had taken the starting snapper spot from incumbent Shawn Byrnes after spring practice, according to line coach Matt Moore.

There have been no indications on how Leach will deal with the matter.

COMMENTARY: While many coaches will suspend a player almost immediately upon arrest, Leach has shown great patience in waiting until all the facts are in. However, having a grand jury indict you is indicative that enough evidence exists to warrant the charges.
