Earlier this season, the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team was like a roller coaster -- it scared some people (leading No. 2 Texas 28-9 at halftime, for instance), but didn't do any real harm.

That changed Saturday afternoon when the Cowboys knocked off the 13th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders at Boone Pickens Stadium, 24-17, OSU's first Big 12 victory of the season. In a classic matchup of run versus pass, the home team's running back tandem of Mike Hamilton (161 rushing yards) and Julius Crosslin (91) trumped the usual aerial circus thrown up by the Red Raiders (303 yards passing from Tech QB Cody Hodges).

Texas Tech came into the game leading the nation with 433 passing yards a game, but the OSU secondary held Hodges to a single touchdown pass, a 4-yard flip to Jarrett Hicks with 14:42 left in the fourth quarter that shaved Oklahoma State's lead to 17-10. Seconds later, Cowboy QB Bobby Reid fumbled back into the end zone and Tech's Chris Hudler pounced on it. Alex Trlica's extra point tied the game at 17.

Oklahoma State got the ball for the last time with 6:43 remaining and pounded it relentlessly through a suspect Red Raiders run defense. The last four carries by Crosslin were like a partial countdown to the upcoming celebration -- 12 yards, 11, 10, nine. Finally, with 23 ticks remaining on the clock, backup quarterback Al Pena scored from a yard out.

Texas Tech's Taurean Henderson, who had scored six rushing touchdowns the previous two weeks, was held to minus-6 yards on the ground. He did become the third player in NCAA history to top 2,000 career yards in rushing and pass receiving, but it was a bittersweet achievement.

Hamilton gave the crowd a shot of adrenalin in the first quarter, bursting 83 yards up the middle for a score. D'Juan Woods then caught a touch pass from Reid before Trlica and Bruce Redden traded field goals.

Oklahoma State is now 4-5, 1-5 in league play, while Texas Tech slipped to 8-2, 5-2.
