It had to be wearing on him.

No. 7 said and did all the right things during the offseason.

After all, with the additions made in the offseason, Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson was about to become arguably the most scrutinized player in the NFL's NFC North.

In Minnesota, the expectations were sky high. And the only remaining question that really matters was: Can Jackson lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl?

Then some guy name Favre toyed with coming out of retirement. Then the speculation began that he wanted to play in Minnesota.

And the circus began.

Jackson made all the right moves. He continued to work hard. He showed good signs in practice, making plays he hadn't necessarily made in Mankato, Minn., before. But the cloud had to be hanging over him.

Jackson said he would be honored to back up Favre, finding a way to "learn from one of the best in the game."

Inside, though, it must have been eating Jackson up.

After all that effort in the offseason, staying in Minnesota and working out in Florida with some of the NFL's best, would he be relegated to the bench because some guy from Mississippi decided he wanted to come out of retirement and play one more season?

Luckily for the former second-round pick from Alabama State, those questions are now gone because the Packers traded Favre to the New York Jets last week.

All that remains now is the question that originally hung over this squad entering 2008: Is Jackson good enough to take the talented Vikings to the Promised Land?

Everyone is going to find out soon enough.

Training Camp: An entirely new kind of fantasy game!
