Unless you’ve been hiding in a sports information Black Hole, you know that Brett Favre is now a Viking. While the information is still rolling in, let’s take a few minutes to extrapolate on the facts that are already available.

Brett Favre, like most veterans, has no desire to attend training camp. He’s certainly not the first and definitely won’t be the last senior player to find new and inventive ways to avoid the rigors of training camp.

Childress is either very well versed in media manipulation, as are most NFL coaches, or he’s the puppet dangling at the end of Bus Cook’s strings. I’m far more inclined to believe the former, but visions of Barry Switzer always dance through my head when I imagine the latter… Thankfully, Chilly seems far more intelligent than Switz ever did.

Tarvaris Jackson’s last chance to embrace his God given destiny blew off the field in Lucas Oil Stadium last week with the rest of the flotsam. Maybe if T-Jack had played to his full potential against the Colts, Brett would still be retired or at least would have been rebuked by the Wilfs when he came knocking yesterday. Or maybe T-Jack’s number has been up for some time… I can easily imagine a scenario that could have happened seconds after Jackson’s first aborted pass bounced off the ground at his feet last Friday and Zygi Wilf turned to Rick Spielman and said “Get Favre on the phone. Give him whatever he wants. Now!”

What does this mean for fans? The Vikings are arguably the best team in the NFC, and were already one of the best. It remains to be seen if they can outclass Pittsburgh and New England (well, to be honest, outclassing Belichick is probably far easier than beating his team). However, the NFC can easily crown Minnesota as the Great Purple Hope after today’s news and purple power will reign in stadiums throughout the country well into 2010.

Now, keep in mind, there aren’t any solid guarantees Favre will perform like he did in 2007. So, what happens if he continues his poor play from late ’08? Childress simply puts Rosenfels in and lets Peterson, Harvin, Allen and the Williams Wall do what they do best.

As some one on www.purplepride.org told me this morning, “It’s a good time to be a Vikings fan.”

Yes, yes it is.
