Minnesota Vikings got Sam Cowart from the New York Jets for a seventh round draft pick. Cowart may become the Vikings' starting middle linebacker, though he can also play outside.

Cowart is the fifth defensive starter added this offseason. The team also added LB Napoleon Harris, CB Fred Smoot, FS Darren Sharper, and DT Pat Williams.

The former Florida State Seminole was a second round pick for the Buffalo Bills in 1998. He has 625 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 4 interceptions and 17 passes defended in 84 games played.

Cowart was named to the Pro Bowl in 2000. In 2001, he played only one game due to an Achilles' tendon injury. He missed half of 2004 because of a sprained knee ligament. His replacement, Jonathan Vilma, wound up receiving the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

The trade reunites Cowart with Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, the former Buffalo and New York coordinator. Cottrell played a role in the Bills drafting Cowart out of FSU and the Jets signing him as a free agent in 2002.

Last year's starter - EJ Henderson - is slated to return to special-teams play while backing up Cowart.
