On Saturday, Minnesota Vikings safety Tank Williams was carted off the field with a fractured left knee cap.

The strong safety injured his knee while backpedaling during a seven-on-seven passing drill. Williams planted his leg, screamed and fell to the ground without contact. The injury will keep him out for the entire 2006 season.

This offseason, the 26-year-old Williams signed a one-year contract with the Vikings. In training camp he has took most of the snaps with the first-string defense, although competing with the recently signed Dwight Smith for the starting job.

Smith will now take over the starting safety spot opposite free safety Darren Sharper.
