Warner would make sense for Minnesota

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the the Minnesota Vikings are interested in Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner.

Call me crazy, but acquiring the veteran would be a good move.

Tarvaris Jackson would still be the Vikings' starting quarterback. The 36-year-old Warner would be brought in to back up the pro sophomore. Even at this point in his career, Warner would be a much better option off the bench than Brooks Bollinger.

Nothing against Bollinger, but since being acquired by the Vikings, in limited action, he has yet to make anything positive happen and has often ended up on the turf. And it's not as though he brings a wealth of experience and success to help mentor Jackson.

Warner, on the other hand, has experienced both success and failure. He has been to the top of mountain, winner of two NFL MVP awards (1999, 2001) and an MVP in Super Bowl XXXIV with the St. Louis Rams. After his stint with the Rams, Warner played for the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals. With both the Giants and Cardinals, he was benched after mediocre performances. Therefore, if Minnesota is looking for him to recapture the magic, it needs to look elsewhere.

Warner could still be a good fill-in for a game or two if Jackson were to succumb to injury, but he should not and would not be considered the long-term answer. Still, it couldn't hurt to bring him in as a backup.

In 2006, he signed a three-year, $18 million contract that could be worth up to $22 million, which is a steep price for a backup. There's a chance he may be willing to restructure his deal, but if not that could be a stumbling block in any trade.

In any event, it will be interesting to see what happens with Arizona, Warner and the Vikings.
