Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Matt Birk underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. The Pro Bowl center could recover from the operation in 2 or 3 months, according to the team trainer. The Vikings open the 2005 regular season on September 11 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This will be the fourth operation for the 6 foot 4 inch, 306 pound Birk in the last year. The other 3 procedures were performed to repair sports hernias. It is possible that the labrum could have been torn while Birk was compensating for the hernia injuries.

Backup center Cory Withrow will replace Birk. The 6'2", 287 lbs. Withrow started 5 games at center and saw action in a total of 12 games during 2004.
