Oscar Smith High School (Chesapeake, Va.) running back Perry Jones gave his verbal commitment to Virginia on Monday. He is the ninth commitment to Al Groh’s 2009 recruiting class.

Jones, who runs the 40 in 4.3 seconds, also plays linebacker, but the Cavs are currently eyeing Perry as a safety.

Virginia beat out Navy, Delaware, Boston College, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, Stanford and Vanderbilt for the player.

COMMENTARY: With highly rated Dominique Wallace and Alex Owah already committed, the 2009 class appears to be stocked on the backfield. So using the hard-hitting Jones and his blazing speed at the safety position appears to be a good move by Groh and staff.
