Coach Al Groh’s Virginia Cavalier picked up commitments from three players for the 2009 class. Catholic High (Clearwater, Fla.) tight end Paul Freedman, Brunswick High (Greenwich, Conn.) receiver Kevin Royal and Camden High (Camden, N.J.) receiver Tyree Watkins gave their verbals on Saturday.

The 6-foot-6, 224-pound Freedman chose Virginia over Florida International, Boston College, Duke, Florida, Indiana, Miami and Vanderbilt.

The 6-4, 205-pound Royal chose Virginia over Boston College, UConn, Duke, Miami and Rutgers.

The 6-2, 185-pound Watkins, who had 70 catches for 989 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, chose Virginia over Arizona State, UConn, Iowa, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Stanford.

Bob Diaco was the primary on Freedman and Royal, whereas Mike Groh was the primary on Watkins.

COMMENTARY: These three bring the Cavs' tally to 15 total commitments for 2009. Before Royal and Watkins, the class had no receivers committed.
