The Virginia Tech Hokies picked up a total of three commitments recently -- two for the 2009 class and one for 2010.

For 2009, Virginia Tech got verbals from running back Nubian Peak of Pulaski County High (Dublin, Va.) and kicker Cody Journell of Giles High (Ripplemeade, Va.)

At 5-foot-11, 185 pounds and clocked at 4.4 seconds in the 40, Peak appears to be a multipurpose back. As a runner, he totaled 1,349 yards on 158 touches and 16 touchdowns last season; as a receiver, meanwhile, he caught 11 passes for almost 300 yards and two touchdowns. Furthermore, he’s returned nine kickoffs for 170 yards, almost a 19-yard average. He chose Tech over Ohio, North Carolina and Virginia.

Journell, who reportedly was getting field goals from 50-plus yards out and booting the rock 70 yards on kickoffs, chose Blacksburg over Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Maryland and Virginia.

For the 2010 class Frank Beamer’s program got a verbal from King William High (Richmond, Va.) 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle Nick Acree. He chose Virginia Tech over Maryland, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee and Virginia.

Billy Hite is credited as the primary for Peak and Journell, and Curt Newsome was the primary for Acree.

COMMENTARY: Quite a spike for Beamer’s program, as the Hokies only had one commitment before June 7. Now they have a total of six between the two classes.
