George Washington High (Danville, Va.) running back David Wilson gave the thumbs-up to Virginia Tech on Friday for the ’09 class.

Last season, the 5-foot-11, 192-pounder rushed for over 1,500 yards, 17 touchdowns and had an average of 11-plus yards a touch. Rivals rates Wilson as a four-star recruit.

"There were a lot of factors (in Wilson's decision) that had to do with his familiarity with the school," George Washington head coach Dan Newell said. "He'd been up there a number of times for track-and-field events at the indoor facility. There were the three (football players) from GW who were up there. There's the proximity to home."

Wilson chose Blacksburg over a host of schools, including Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia, Auburn, South Carolina and Michigan. Offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring was the primary on Wilson.

COMMENTARY: Although Rivals lists Wilson as an athlete, he is the second running back to commit to coach Frank Beamer’s program (Nubian Peak was the first). With this high-profile pickup, the quality of the Hokies’ recruiting class, now at eight commitments, just spiked.
