"To be continued" TV episodes are bad.

"To be continued" quarterback situations might be even worse.

That, however, is what the Virginia Tech Hokies have on their hands. Rising sophomore Sean Glennon entered the spring as the number-one signal caller and retained the title after completing 5-of-6 passes for 36 yards in last Saturday's spring game. But head coach Frank Beamer would not go as far as to name him the starter heading into the 2006-07 season, saying instead that Glennon would compete with classmate Cory Holt and rising freshman Ike Whitaker.

Like a TV episode that is inevitably continued, Hokies fans saw this indecision by Beamer coming and probably had a sinking feeling because of it. Nobody will ever confuse Glennon with one of the Vick brothers, but he's steady, and that's all the Hokies might need if their defense can continue to shine and running backs develop. Had Glennon won the job outright, life would have been so much easier. But Glennon faltered, and Holt, who for two years couldn't grasp the offense, suddenly got it. To make matters worse, when Whitaker came back from suspension, he showed enough of his trademark athleticism to put him in the mix. The only quarterback who didn't catch Glennon was rising freshman Greg Boone, who missed time with injury and illness. His lack of experience plus his size (he weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 280 pounds) probably means he'll change positions in the fall.

So when the spring game rolled around, Hokies fans knew that no matter how well any of the quarterbacks performed, they probably wouldn't be afforded the luxury of knowing who their starting quarterback would be until August, maybe later.

Beamer said that he'd like to have it all sorted out by the middle of the preseason, and that it wasn't something that Glennon did not do that made him hold off, rather what the others did do. That having been said, the fact that he doesn't have it sorted out yet probably doesn't bode well for Glennon. Glennon was the Ole' Reliable of the threesome. Holt has better tools than Glennon, and Whitaker may have better ones than Holt. Although Beamer was inclined to go with Ol' Reliable before the spring, he might be leaning towards something a little flashier now.

Nobody will know for sure until August, but expect the debate over who it should be to be the favorite summer pastime of Hokie fans in Blacksburg and everywhere else.

If that's what you're looking for, then maybe "to be continued" quarterback situations aren't that bad after all.
